There are many Search Engine Optimization professionals who toil hard to make their sites rank amongst the top sites. In order to do so they go for various ways of link building. But what I think, it is not correct and therefore these professionals should not go for mere link building strategies and should have a very clear way and ideas so that there is no crime in the eyes of Google.
When you go for Search Engine Optimization, It needs to be a legal one i.e, White hat SEO. There are mainly three types of SEO. They are:-
1. White Hat
2. Black Hat
3. Gray Hat
Out of these three types, one is a crime. It is not legal in the eyes of Google. If you go for Black Hat SEO, you are a criminal. Google might even penalize your website. This might result in the de-indexing of your website as well.
There are various people who go for Black Hat SEO and risk their sites from ban. The most proficient type of Search Engine Optimization is the White hat SEO. This type of Search Engine Optimization is also called as ethical SEO. In this type of Search Engine Optimization the work is done within the guidelines. Search Engines do not mind if you go for Grey Hat SEO and bring your site into ranking. It is permitted by the search engines.
Now, the Gray Hat SEO lies at the middle of Black Hat and White Hat. There are some obligations with this type of Search Engine Optimization but not that much, which might result in the ban of the website. In the Gray Hat SEO, work is almost done like the Black Hat but not to the extreme level. So there is no risk of ban to the website but it might get penalized.
The best way to rank your website is to go with Social Media Optimization and there is no threat of being a criminal and moreover you can feel free to work any way you want without the fear of penalty or ban.
