Oscars: Awkward and Memorable

Academy Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion picture Arts and Science honored for the best films and a collection of 24 technical as well as artistic performances in the United States film industry every year. There are always few unforgettable moments in the Oscar history and these moments remain in memory of millions of audience. Let us sum up these memories and throw some light on some of the most memorable Oscar moments through the years.
1.       First Oscars: On the 16th Of May 1929, the biggest event in the history of United States Cinema took place at the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. This was a mass participation and honors were distributed amongst the outstanding performances in the field of Cinema. This was the start of such an era where the actors and cinema related people start to toil hard and competition arrive at the prime level.

2.       Longest, Sadest and most shattering Walk: In 1934, at the 6th Academy Awards, most awkward incidents happened in the life of Frank Capra as he was just a few steps away. In fact he was his last name away, from his first Academic Award.  Two directors, with the same first name were nominated for best-director award and Will Rogers, the presenter of the award, uttered “Come Up and get it Frank” without the last name and Frank Capra nominated for Lady For A Day almost reached the stage but when he realized, Frank Lloyd was the winner, Capra returned to the seat with the longest walk back.

3.       Tie At Oscars: There has been various ties at the Academic Awards but the very first tie was between Barbra Streisand and Katherine Hepburn, splitting their best-actress title amongst each other. But Barbra was the one who collected he awards as Katherine was not present at the ceremony.

4.       Just Thank You: Alfred Hitchcock, not just being a notable film producer but also that historical person who uttered “Thank You” as his Oscar speech when he won Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1968.

5.       Oscar? No Oscar: Marlon Brando denied accepting the award creating history and the most surreal moments in the history of Academy Awards.  In 1973, Marlon Brando refused the Oscars as well as, boycotted the show for the inappropriate treatment of American Indians by the film industry.

6.       Gay Activist goes nude: At the 1974 Oscars, Robert Opel, the gay activist runs across nude behind the host David Niven while he was introducing Elizabeth Taylor. This incident was one of the funniest and the most astonishing in the history of Oscars.

7.       Oscar Posthumously: Receiving Oscar posthumously is not a practice that is followed very highly. But there are definitely celebrities, who have left this materialistic World before receiving the highest award in the film industry in the United States. There is a good list of such artists but the first to receive such an award was the writer Sidney Howard for the movies “Gone with the Wind”.

8.       You Like Me: The “You Like Me ” Speech by Sally Field after winning the best-actress award at the Academy Awards has won many hearts but her quotes are still being misquoted. This speech is certainly the most memorable moment at the Oscars.

9.       Shit On Camera: During the 1995 Oscars, Martin Landau won the supporting-actor for the movie Ed Wood but the other nominee, Samuel L. Jackson, was seen uttering “shit” on camera after losing to Landau.

10.   Top Of the Seat: Roberto Benigni, overjoyed with the Oscar win at the 1999 Oscars held at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the best-foreign-film. He was so overjoyed that he stood on the top of the seat and approached to the stage leaping on top of his chair. Certainly a very memorable day at the Oscars.

11.   Female Director: The 2010 Oscars is remembered in history for Kathryn Bigelow, as he won the best director for the movie Avatar. Prior to this there were three other women who were nominated for this award but a woman has to wait till 2010 to be crowned the best director.

12.   African-American Woman: At the 2002 Oscars, Halle Berry won the best actress award for Monster’s Ball to which she burst into tears and said, “This is so much bigger than me”. Her speech spoke for her on what it meant to win a Oscar.

13.   Fall Off the Stage: When Jennifer Lawrence was announced the winner in the best-actress category for her movie, Silver Linings Playbook, while approaching towards the stage the actress fell off the stairs. This must have been the most embarrassing moment at the Oscars. She tripped on her Dior while walking up the stairs.

14.   Claiming 11 awards: Winning a total of 11 academy awards, “Lord Of The Rings: Return Of the King” created history making it a film that won the maximum awards along with its predecessors “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur”. At the 76th Oscar annual ceremony Peter Jackson’s film claimed this outstanding achievement.

15.   Kiss The Presenter: During the 75th Annual Academy Awards in 2003, Adrien Body, winner of best actor for the movie “The Pianist” kissed the presenter Halle berry out of joy. It was not just the joy for winning the Oscars, but he also created history as he became the youngest actor to achieve this feat.

The Academy Awards have at least one memorable moment every year but the list stated above are the list of such moments that cannot be forgotten by anybody. There are various other incidents that occur such as unexpected dressing by the actors and actresses. Extraordinary reactions by the winners and the nominees as well as the amazing speech by the winners are some of the features that come only to Oscar ceremony. There are bizarre as well as overwhelmed moments that remain at the back of the mind of each and every movie lover. The most memorable moments at The Oscars’ Ceremony every year becomes the most discussed topic for the entire year making this event one of the biggest success in the history of television. This annual ceremony is a star studded occasion where the stars appear at their best attire and pose in front of the camera. The performances at the Oscars remain high voltage with a great gathering of the superstars.
